About the Author

Diana Hutsell is a lifelong storyteller and passionate advocate for children. A native Tennessean, Diana spent time in Western North Carolina but is now happily back home in East Tennessee, where her love of books and her dedication to helping children feel seen and valued continue to shape her work.

An avid reader and writer from an early age, Diana has always found joy in crafting stories. While she has explored many forms of writing, her heart has always belonged to children’s books. She believes that stories have the power to teach, heal, and create connection—especially for young readers navigating a complex world.

Diana’s core belief is simple yet profound: differences should be embraced, not feared. She teaches that understanding one another is the first step toward acceptance and inclusivity—values she passed on to her own children and grandchildren and now shares with families through her books.

Her professional and volunteer experiences have only deepened her insight into the challenges children face. Diana has worked as a substitute teacher for elementary and middle school students, a juvenile officer for boys ages 13–21, and served in guest services and special needs assistance at Dollywood. She’s also volunteered with Samaritan House (a homeless shelter for families), Appalachian Outreach (a poverty relief ministry), special education programs, Special Olympics, and most recently became a certified Guardian ad Litem in Henderson County, NC.

Diana’s Understanding My World series, written for children ages 6–10, is her heartfelt effort to help kids understand themselves and others. Each story explores real-life issues, differences, and challenges in a way that is age-appropriate, compassionate, and empowering. At its core, the series promotes understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity.

In 2024, Diana launched a second series, Skye Squirrel, for children ages 2–8. Skye—short for Strength Knowing Your Emotions—is a white squirrel whose tail changes colors based on how he feels. The series helps young children recognize and express their emotions in healthy, meaningful ways.

Through every story she tells, Diana’s message is clear: every child deserves to feel seen, understood, and loved.
