I wrote Josh Sees Colors when my grandson was three and is now 28. I was visiting my daughter Michelle in Texas to help with Christopher during her college semester finals.

I was outside playing with Christopher, and Julie, Michelle’s neighbor, yelled at me to come over. She had two children. Her daughter was six. Her son, Josh, was ten and blind.

While she and I watched the kids playing hide and seek, I had to ask her if this game was a good idea. She laughed and said, “Just watch.”

When it was Josh’s turn to be it, the smaller ones would make noise so that Josh could find them. At one point, Josh got upset. Both kids immediately ran to him and gave him a big hug and said, “It’s okay, Joshie.” The next moment they were all rolling on the grass laughing. Julie and I were, too.

The majority of my stories are based on some encounter or experience that I have had in life. I’m always amazed at how great kids are. If only adults saw the world the way that kids do!
