Share the Love includes two heartfelt stories inspired by real events and extraordinary children I’ve encountered in my life. Both center around children with long-term illnesses, and both left a lasting impact on me.
The Balloon Girl was inspired by a little girl I lovingly call my “friend for life.” We went through cancer treatments at the same time and would compare our bald heads. One day, while visiting her great-grandparents (my neighbors), she came running to my door just to say hi. When I opened it, she saw that my hair had started to grow back—but hers hadn’t. With all the honesty and spirit in the world, she said, “Miss Diana, you need to shave your head so we can still match!” She was one of the most amazing children I’ve ever known.
A Special Delivery is based on an unforgettable moment during my time working security at Dollywood. A group of students on a field trip approached me, hoping to get a card from Dolly Parton sent to a classmate in the hospital for a kidney transplant. I promised to try. And thanks to the kindness of Dollywood’s admin team, Ken and Judy, and many generous hearts, we did much more. Cards poured in from country music stars, NFL players (especially the New England Patriots), and even a Disney artist who created a custom illustration just for the little boy.
These stories are a celebration of kindness, courage, and the love that surrounds us—sometimes when we least expect it.
People truly are amazing when you give them the chance.
